  • Precision Aluminum Alloy Castings: In addition to die casting, gravity casting and low-pressure casting can also meet high-precision requirements
    Oct 03, 2026
Many overseas buyers searching for precision die-casting suppliers assume that only high-pressure die casting can achieve strict dimensional tolerances. In reality, for many aluminum alloy parts, gravity casting combined with subsequent CNC machining can equally meet precision fit requirements—and often delivers superior performance regarding airtightness and internal density.   As a primary manufacturer specializing in gravity-cast aluminum alloy components, we help clients understand the true source of "precision": it is not defined by the name of the casting process itself, but is the combined result of mold accuracy, process control, and integrated machining capabilities.       I. Precision Does Not Equal Die Casting: The Core Logic of Process Selection "Precision die casting" typically refers to high-pressure die casting, which excels in producing thin-walled parts, high-volume runs, and excellent surface finishes. However, the high-pressure filling process tends to trap gas, resulting in numerous internal micropores—a significant limitation for parts requiring airtightness or heat treatment.   In contrast, gravity casting involves a smooth, steady flow of molten aluminum, allowing ample time for gas to escape and minimizing internal porosity. This makes it particularly suitable for components requiring airtightness—such as valve bodies, pump housings, and parts with complex internal channels formed by sand cores. When paired with precision mold making and CNC machining, gravity-cast parts can achieve exceptional dimensional accuracy.   As a manufacturer of gravity casting equipment, we offer a wide range of machine types and sizes; we provide objective recommendations based on your blueprints, rather than forcing the part design to accommodate specific equipment limitations.     II. Airtightness: An Often Overlooked Weakness of Die Castings For aluminum alloy parts requiring airtightness—such as hydraulic valve bodies, battery housings, and pneumatic components—gravity casting and low-pressure casting are generally more reliable options than high-pressure die casting.   Internal micropores are difficult to eliminate completely in high-pressure die castings. While impregnation treatments can improve airtightness, they add extra processing steps and costs. Gravity casting (with its steady filling) and low-pressure casting (with its pressurized feeding) mitigate the risk of internal defects at the very source of the manufacturing process. For airtight components, our factory performs X-ray flaw detection and pneumatic/hydraulic testing. Test data is archived alongside batch reports, ensuring that every part leaving the factory has been verified.       III. CNC Machining: Ensuring Precision Tolerances CNC machining is the critical step for achieving final precision fits. Cast blanks are produced with appropriate machining allowances, and multi-axis machining centers perform drilling, tapping, face milling, and precision boring to keep key dimensions within drawing tolerances.   We offer a one-stop service covering both casting and CNC precision machining. Castings move directly from the mold to the machine shop, eliminating the need for external logistics. If mold adjustments are required following the full-dimensional inspection of the first article, internal feedback loops are far faster than cross-facility collaboration. For parts requiring precision die-casting-grade tolerances, this integrated model allows for quicker correction of dimensional deviations and ensures batch-to-batch consistency.       IV. Customization Based on Drawings or Samples; Flexible Supply for Small and Large Batches Precision aluminum alloy castings are typically custom-developed products. We support customization based on customer drawings or samples, providing full support throughout the process—from drawing review and precision mold making to sample validation and mass production.   During the small-batch trial phase, we use prototype molds to manage upfront investment; once validated, we switch to multi-cavity production molds. We apply the same quality control standards—including spectral analysis, CMM inspection, and airtightness testing—across all batch sizes, ensuring complete quality documentation and traceability. We can also flexibly schedule production to meet the needs of trading clients requiring a wide variety of parts in small batches.   Conclusion Precision die casting is not the only route to producing high-precision aluminum alloy parts. Gravity casting combined with CNC machining often provides buyers with a more reliable solution regarding airtightness, internal density, and dimensional stability.   As a manufacturer specializing in gravity casting equipment, we also support the customization of machinery based on customer drawings or samples.

  • Understanding Gravity Casting
    Aug 21, 2026
Those in the foundry industry are very familiar with the term gravity casting, but what exactly is it? Today, Kuntai News will guide you through the field of gravity casting in an easy-to-understand way.   Before discussing gravity casting, we need to start with the classification of casting processes. As we all know, everything has its category, and technological processes are no exception. There are many processes for turning metal materials into desired products, such as casting, forging, extrusion, rolling, drawing, stamping, cutting, powder metallurgy, and so on. Among them, casting can be considered one of the most basic, commonly used, and widely applied processes. Casting can also be divided into gravity casting and pressure casting based on the pouring process of molten metal. This is what we will focus on today.   Since we're going to talk about gravity casting, we first need to know what gravity casting is. Baidu Baike defines gravity casting as: "The process of injecting molten metal into a mold under the influence of Earth's gravity." In simpler terms, from a narrow perspective, it means pouring molten metal into a mold of the desired shape, allowing it to cool and solidify, and the desired product is formed. Therefore, gravity casting is also called casting. The effect of gravity is similar to an apple falling from an apple tree. Due to gravity, the molten metal fills every corner of the mold. However, if the product's structure is complex and not simply a horizontal surface, the machine needs to be tilted to allow the liquid to flow fully. Understanding gravity casting makes pressure casting easier to explain: it's the process of injecting molten metal into a mold under the influence of other external forces (here, excluding gravity).   Next, let's discuss the characteristics of gravity casting. Because gravity casting relies on Earth's gravity, it has better mechanical properties, mature solution heat treatment, higher production efficiency than sand casting, and more perfect dimensional accuracy. At this point, you might be wondering what sand casting is. Sand casting, also known as sand mold casting, is a traditional casting process that uses sand as the primary molding material to create products. A single metal mold can be used for hundreds to tens of thousands of castings; hence, it's also called permanent mold casting. Because each sand mold can only be used once, the mold is damaged after the casting is obtained, requiring remolding, resulting in lower production efficiency. Furthermore, due to the soft and porous nature of sand, sand castings have lower dimensional accuracy and rougher surfaces. This explains why gravity casting is more efficient and dimensionally more accurate than sand casting. While gravity casting has lower production efficiency, less precise appearance and dimensions compared to die casting, and is more expensive, it allows for post-treatment heat treatment to meet certain mechanical requirements. Die casting, on the other hand, cannot undergo solution treatment because the molten metal is rapidly injected into the mold without time for gas to escape. Moreover, gravity casting molds are cheaper than die casting molds. The material of the gravity casting mold is the key to the gravity casting machine. The commonly used materials are 45# steel, P20 steel or H13 steel. The service life of each material is different, but they are all in the tens of thousands.
